A New Direction- (12/29/17)

A cold, winter day
A girl strides past a sea of people
Her eyes searching for one particular person
The girl waits inside an antiquated musical theater
Unsure of what to expect

She steals a glance at the time
2 minutes ‘till 3
Her heart begins to beat twice as fast
Constant pacing back and forth
Repeated glances of her reflection in the mirror
As she stares at a flyer, she hears a familiar voice
He calls her name and she turns to the direction of the sound
There before her, he stands

They exchange an awkward embrace
Greetings aside, the two head out to venture the streets
Garlands, lit lights, and Christmas music fills the air
All of which create a romantic atmosphere
She can feel her cheeks burn slightly
As this thought comes to mind

Trying to fill the silence, she initiates the conversation
Strolling aimlessly, street to street
Her shoulders begin to relax
The pace of her heartbeat has slowed
Minutes pass, then hours
By this time, both have lowered their guards
Surprisingly, she finds herself grinning wholeheartedly
The smiles just come so naturally
Like an automatic reflex

Still, present are the moments
Of mutual displays of demure demeanor
Accompanied by sheepish grins and the averting of eye contact
Especially as the physical distance decreases
Situated on a bench, a cool breeze of air sweeps by the two
His body is turned to her, eyes looking only at her
A signal of his undivided attention
And she finds herself pouring her soul out
He listens and smiles at her
With a kind, loving gaze that she can’t quite decipher

5 hours pass
Her curfew has arrived
They walk together
The footsteps more gradual the second
As if both wanting to cherish this moment longer

He turns to her, reaching for a hug
Noticing the children staring at the corner
She quickly swoops in to reciprocate the embrace
And a jolt of electricity runs through her body
Or is it the butterflies?
Embarrassed, she runs up the stairs to her car
The cold air and the running leaves her gasping to breathe

As she drives in the freeway
The city lights have an soothing effect
Her mind goes to a million thoughts
Finally, she’s home
She lays in bed, smiling at their encounter
A heart that once belonged elsewhere
Finally opens its dormant doors
This sense of freedom
Has a peculiar sort of sensation to it
Still, she tells herself not to get her hopes up
